What Is The Most Sustainable Cooling Solution for My Business?

There are many pressures to increase the sustainability of your business. First, there are your customers and possibly your employees, whose awareness of environmental concerns continues to grow. You may even feel the desire to reduce the environmental impact of your business. Finally, there’s your bottom line, which can benefit significantly from a sustainable solution that’s less expensive to install and less expensive to operate.

When you’re looking for a more sustainable cooling solution for your business, choose evaporative cooling. Evaporative cooling costs half as much to install and uses less than one-fourth as much energy as air conditioning (refrigerated air cooling). It also exports less heat to the outside of your business, reducing the heat island effect of urban areas.

Comparing Evaporative Cooling and Air Conditioning

Evaporative cooling and air conditioning use very different methods for cooling the air in your business.

The evaporative cooling process is simple. An evaporative cooler works by passing hot air over evaporative media, which is similar to a high-tech sponge. This evaporates the water saturating the evaporative media. Evaporating water requires a lot of energy. That energy comes from the hot air itself, so the air becomes cooler without additional energy cost.

The air conditioning process is much more complicated. An air conditioning circuit has two parts: the hot side and the cold side. Let’s start on the hot side. Here there’s a compressor that increases pressure on the refrigerant gas, concentrating its heat and forcing it to condense. The condensed, hot refrigerant goes through a series of fins to improve heat exchange. A blower pushes outside air over the fins, heating up the outside air, but cooling off the refrigerant. The cooled refrigerant goes through an expansion valve that allows the pressure to drop. With lower pressure, the refrigerant cools. It also evaporates, and this causes the refrigerant to cool even more. The refrigerant now passes through another series of fins, and a second blower pushes inside air over the cooled fins. This cools the inside air, but heats the refrigerant, which goes back to the compressor to start the cycle again.

As you can see, the air conditioning process relies on toxic chemicals and extensive machinery to achieve cooling. All of this comes at a high cost for installation and operation. Air conditioning can cost twice as much to install and four times as much to operate as evaporative cooling.

Diverse Industries Can Benefit from Sustainable Evaporative Cooling

Evaporative cooling can help many industries reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining a cool, comfortable environment for their place of business. Some of the industries where Kuul evaporative media assists with efficient cooling include:

Agricultural operations can benefit greatly from energy-efficient cooling to help provide ideal growing conditions for plants and livestock. Evaporative cooling not only keeps temperatures under control, but it also humidifies the air to help plants and animals avoid dehydration.

Data centers rely on cooling to keep their servers operating. However, the expense of traditional air conditioning can reduce the competitiveness of data centers. Google pioneered the modern use of evaporative cooling to efficiently keep its data centers operating optimally.

Gas turbines benefit from efficient inlet air cooling. Cooler, more humid air allows for higher air mass flow rates. It also improves compressor functionality. As a result, it can improve the turbine output power and efficiency. Evaporative cooling uses a fraction of the energy of refrigerated cooling systems, adds humidity, and won’t lead to ice formation on turbine blades.

Industrial workplaces can get hot with all the machinery, furnaces, and high levels of activity. Evaporative cooling can provide efficient temperature control, helping businesses maintain their competitive advantage. As a side benefit, evaporative coolers introduce fresh air, helping industrial sites maintain good air quality.

Residential cooling systems benefit from efficiency because they help keep costs low for homeowners. They are also popular because of homeowners’ increasing emphasis on environmentally friendly solutions.

Portable cooling lets outdoor workers take cooling with them wherever they go. For road construction, general construction, and oil-and-gas extraction, portable cooling makes sense, because they can provide cooling wherever the current job is located.

Choose Kuul Evaporative Media for Your Evaporative Cooling

Kuul evaporative cooling media provides an outstanding choice for your sustainable cooling approach. High saturation efficiency leads to great cooling, and a low pressure drop across the evaporative media means that you aren’t stressing your blower, which lowers energy and maintenance costs even further. Kuul also offers specialized products compatible with many of these industries – see individual pages for more information.
